I believe it was November 25th of 2013 when a friend of ours (Toby Langmann Nishikawa) decided to put a 40 day challenge out on Facebook to run at least 1 mile per day. For some reason, this challenge was just enough to get me (Mitch) off my chair and start to run more consistently, not that I wasn't running at all. I don't know what it was, maybe burnout, maybe just plain lazyness, but I wasn't getting out much and I needed something. Well, I'm excited to say I hit that 40 day challenge...and now I'm actually coming up on one year! There were many days I only found enough time to run just one mile, but I was able to fit it in.
What is it that motivates people to get out and run? To get out of bed early in the morning (or even late at night)? These are questions I've had to ask myself since finishing up my college career at Utah State University. I look at people all over the world who put so much effort into the sport and sometimes wonder, "Why?" What gets them going? For me, sometimes a race or someone challenging me, but it's usually something outside myself. I know some who are internally motivated (maybe for weight control or just to feel better about themselves)...either way, getting out and running helps in all aspects of your life including your mental, spiritual, emotional and physical states. Whatever motives you, keep it going!
